Asthma is a very unpredictable kind of
disease. You may never know when you might have an attack as it
strikes with little to no pre attack symptoms. So there was felt the
need for a medication that is very effective in stopping a potential
attack and at the same time is easy to carry around with you where
ever you go. This necessity led to the emergence of the now famous
asthma inhalers. Most of these inhalers use ozone-depleting
chlorofluorocarbons as propellants, but several other environment
friendly delivery methods and propellants are increasingly
available. There are two types of inhalers available in the market.
Both have there own system of functioning with there specific kind
of delivery system.
The Two Types of
Inhalers available in the market include
1. Meter Dosed inhaler:
It is the most common form of inhaler available in the market. They
are the most famous asthma drug delivery system available in the
market. This device helps in the delivery of precise amount of the
drug directly into the lungs. The method of using a meter dose
inhaler is quite easy and even a kid can use it without much of a
fuss. The person needs to first exhale completely and then place the
MDI to his lips. After that you need to press on the top of the
canister to get the perfect dose of the drug directly into the
lungs. The patient than needs to hold his breadth for about ten
seconds .these inhalers must be used regularly as prescribed and the
patient carefully trained in their use in order for them to be
effective and safe
2. Dry Powder Inhaler:
This is a new system of asthma drug delivery system recently
becoming popular among the patients. The plus point of using this
drug is that these inhalers are environment friendly and can be put
directly into the lungs. Such types of
inhalers include
1. Rotahaler
2. Spinhaler
3. Turbohaler
4. Clickhaler
5. Diskhaler
6. Twisthaler
7. Spiros
How ever these dry powder inhalers are not considered suitable for
children below the age of five. Also Humidity or extreme
temperatures can affect their performance. They work similar to
meter dosed inhalers. The person needs to first exhale completely
and then place the device to his lips. But unlike breath-actuated
MDIs, however, the patient must inhale rapidly.
